Persepolis is an animated film that's based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. It follows Marjane's life growing up in Tehran during the Iranian revolution. The movie starts when Marjane is a very young girl in the late 70's, and shows us her life for many years, as she spends her teens in Vienna (after her parents send her away from Iran to keep her safe), as she returns to Iran as a young woman, and as she finally finds pride in her heritage.

The movie was really engrossing - Marjane is a self-deprecating narrator, who is very likable despite being very flawed. I learned a lot about the horrors that Iranian citizens had to endure after their country was taken over by Islamic fundamentalists. And the animation was unique and beautiful. Here is the trailer so that you can get a sense of the look of the film.

(By the way, if you don't like subtitles, the DVD has an English-language audio track, with Sean Penn and Iggy Pop doing two of the voices. We watched in the original French, though).
