2007
Written and Directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
Starring Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson, Kelly MacDonald

I'm a big fan of the Coen Brothers. Raising Arizona, the Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou, the Big Lebowski...they're all favorites of mine. So I was excited to see their latest.

And I wasn't disappointed. No Country for Old Men wasn't a comedy like so many of their other movies, but it was gritty, suspenseful, and very well-done.

Josh Brolin plays Llewelyn Moss, a simple man who, while out hunting in the remote west Texas desert, comes across five dead bodies who have shot each other over a drug deal gone wrong. He also finds a few hundred pounds of heroin and a suitcase containing about $2 million. He leaves the bodies and drugs but takes the money home and hides it.

Meanwhile, Anton (Javier Bardem) is a relentless and sadistic hit man who has been hired to get the money back, and Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Jones) is a lawman close to retirement who is just trying to fix the whole mess and get Moss out of danger.

The movie was very graphic and very violent, but also contained just enough Coen's signature quirk. The performances were amazing (especially Bardem's, who will most likely be nominated for an Oscar) and the look of the film was perfect.

I don't want to give too much away because the plot is so twisty and suspenseful, but if you want to see a really good, creepy thriller, don't let this one pass you by.
